Join me for this casual but informative weekly plein air class!  Each week we will meet in a Milwaukee area park to paint the great outdoors.  Demonstration and discussion will help students to work toward individual goals.  This class will be geared toward oil painting, but acrylics will also be accepted.  Locations will be determined based on student preference, but possible parks include:

Washington Park, Humboldt Park, Greenfield Park, Jackson Park, Mitchell Park

Open to all levels of experience.

Mondays, July 30 – August 20, 6:30-8:30pm

Learn pastel drawing while focusing on landscape as subject matter.  Materials, tools and techniques will be covered as you learn how to layer and blend pastels to achieve gradation, depth and atmosphere.  Color discussions and demonstrations will help you layer color to achieve desired results.  We will start with a few exercises to develop concepts and then we will move on to complete drawings, working from both photographs and life.

Come work in a creative environment with a professional artist for one-on-one sessions that will help you develop your skills, direction, and focus. Beki Borman graduated from the Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design in 2004 with a BFA in painting. She has worked for years in both painting and drawing mediums and is well versed in tools and techniques as well as design and composition. Beki has taught classes and workshops at several locations throughout Southeastern Wisconsin and has experience with oil, acrylic, watercolor, pastel, graphite, and more.

No matter your experience, Beki will develop a plan and schedule with you to work with your goals as an artist. She will work with you side by side in her studio, offering guidance, feedback, while providing lessons and learning plans uniquely designed for you. There is no obligation, you pay by the hour and can cancel at any time.

Beki’s studio is located in Bay View, south of downtown Milwaukee, at the Hide House. This a community of studios and houses many wonderful artists! The Hide House is located at:

Composition is a necessary component of successful artwork, and this class will focus on just that.  Starting with definitions and language, students will develop an understanding of how we react to an artwork based on its composition.  We will use diagrams and examples to see how things like size, weight and proportion dramatically influence the viewer’s relationship to an artwork.  Using still life and drawing, students will apply this understanding to their own work, composing something effective and intended.

With a focus on design and composition, you will start with a theme or idea and create mixed media works which incorporate painting, drawing, cut paper, pasting, layering, etc.  Demonstrations and lectures will be used to help you explore combinations of these materials to create unique works.  Techniques for achieving interesting textures and effects will be covered. This class is open to all levels of experience.

Students will be submerged in the potential uses of watercolor with an emphasis on experimentation. The class will focus on technique beginning with several demos that cover application, mark making, layering, and gouache, stamping, etc. Students will be encouraged to creatively think of their own techniques and develop a unique process. A final painting will be completed using 2 or 3 chosen techniques. This class can be an excellent place for beginners to see all the possibilities watermedia offers, as well as an opportunity for more experienced painters to discover new ways of handling the medium.
